#Russia: Moscow

Luigi Toscano visited Moscow between the 8th and the 14th of January 2015 for the project “Gegen das Vergessen” ("Lest we forget") to meet survivors and take their photographic portraits. Once there, he meet people who had been deported to Germany from different parts of Russia, White Russia, the Ukraine, and Poland. Many were subjected to forced labor in concentration and labor camps. Luigi also met Jewish Russians who had lived in ghettos in the Ukraine. Deported as children, with or without their parents, many had lost their parents and siblings due to the hardships of forced labor and detention.

The meetings with the witnesses of that time, in groups or individually, took place in their homes, as well as in public institutions or parish halls. Although Luigi met with some skepticism, he was always received with warmth and friendliness.

In the few days he spent in Moscow, 40 people ultimately became part of the project. Again Sofia Samoylova Luigi accompanied with the camera.
