Statement of the German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier
The photography tries to capture moments and memories of people. Besides that, it is the art that makes emotions and backgrounds visible. Luigi Toscano focused on the lives of people he took pictures of. Those sober but at the same time emotional pictures captivate the viewer and help him to understand the hard fate of millions of people, who suffered from Holocaust and the war of extermination driven by the National Socialist rule. The exhibition Gegen das Vergessen - Lest We Forget attracted huge attention in Germany. Now it is going to be shown in different locations in Ukraine. The exhibition makes its first stop in the memorial of Babyn Jar on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the murder of tens of thousands of Jews who lived in Kiev. At such a venue the pictures made by Luigi Toscano seem to be silent and present contemporary witnesses. Here in the epicenter of the traumas of the 20th century the exhibition keeps the memories of the past alive, the once that should never be forgotten. Once Anna Akhmatova said: “I'd like to name you all by names”. In the same way Luigi Toscano created eternal witnesses of that time and contributed to ensuring that the future generation lest forget the past.
